Rebuilding Ukraine: Apple Campus architect Norman Foster coordinates efforts

LONDON — Renowned British architect Norman Foster — known for his work on buildings such as New York’s Hearst Tower, Hong Kong’s HSBC headquarters and London’s “Gherkin” office block — is turning his acclaimed skills to help reconstruct war-torn Ukraine. Battered Kharkiv, in Ukraine’s east, will be an early focus, said Foster and the city’s mayor on Friday. “This is an extraordinary opportunity to combine the best, the most loved aspects of a city with the city of the future,” Foster told an online audience. Work started last month on Kharkiv’s master plan, which officials said could be a blueprint for other Ukrainian cities, Reuters reported. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said the focus would be on rebuilding neighborhoods and giving the city a modern feel, after about 25 percent of housing stock was destroyed by Russian bombardment. It will also focus on rebuilding hospitals, schools and cultural institutions in the city that is home to 1.4 million people.
