Takt or SIPS? What’s the Difference?
By Spencer Easton and Kyle Martinez
SIPS (short interval production schedule) is a part of the Takt family, while also not having taken the industry by storm because by definition it was a short-interval that was scheduled.
The folks that use SIPS always love the next level that the production-based math and principles that come with Takt Planning, as it is beyond the colored bar graph.
Much like bar charts and line graphs proceeded CPM, so too did the colored rainbow 🌈 of SIPS precede the production principles and math, the common language of operations science and Takt planning.
These concepts are based on a similar root but SIPS stopped there and failed to go beyond: there is no packaging, leveling, optimization, lean principles, production laws or control systems accompanying the visual of SIPS.
So is a SIPS a Takt plan? Sometimes. But is a Takt Plan SIPS? Not really. There are so many things missing from just a static SIPS chart on the wall.
